Chapter Text

A few hours later the first text arrives.

The second takes another half hour and is about as clear as the first.

“This crap mean anything to you guys?” Blitz is stepping out of his office and waving his phone for the room to see. Loona, who’s seated at the reception desk, doesn’t bother to look up from her own phone, and Moxxie and Millie, who are curled around each other on the waiting room couch and engaging in some camera-worthy PDA, don’t really acknowledge him either.

“Thank you all for your responsiveness. I’ll be sure to note that on your annual reviews.” Blitz turns to head back into his office.

“Wait, are you actually doing annual reviews this year?” This comes from Moxxie of course.

“Is that even a question?” Blitz fires back, head swiveling around much faster than the rest of his body.

“Well, I mean if there are, I think it’d only be fair if you told us the parameters of what you’re evaluating, so we can–”

“Moxxie,” Millie interjects. “He’s not being serious. He just wanted our attention.”

“And now that I have it, you can interpret the weird sh*t Stolas is sending me.” Blitz flings his phone at Moxxie’s head, but, disappointingly, Millie snatches it out of the air before it makes contact.

She holds the phone at arm’s length and squints at the two texts for a long moment before flicking her thumb across the screen.

“I mean, you might have started by actually listening to your voicemails. What’s your voicemail password?”

“Like I f*cking remember.”

Millie surveys Blitz a long moment and punches in the numbers 1234. Moxxie makes a small judgmental tut, clearly not seeing the genius of not having a passcode that’s a double entendre.

The most recent voicemail is nothing but crackling static followed by a faint rustling of feathers and the barely imperceptible sound of breathing.

Blitz folds his arms across his chest, immediately impatient. “Yeah, okay. No. Nevermind. This is clearly a weird sex thing. We don’t need to even waste our time. It was stupid of me to even ask.”

Millie clicks to the second to last message. It’s more or less identical to the last.

Third to last features some mumbling and a decidedly unsexy groan.

Fourth to last is a variation on the third to last and the four preceding seem to show a little more effort or a little less drunkenness and slightly more passionate unintelligible speech.

Back even four more there are full-on sentences, still garbled, interspersed with Blitz’s name. Big surprise…the horny, obsessive f*ck. But he feels a mixture of pride and vindication. He’d told Moxxie they were booty calls the day before, and while it’s turned out they’re more depressing than fun, at least he has the satisfaction of having been right all along.

Back two voicemails and more they’re at the sad, uncomfortably weepy drunk phase of Stolas’ bender.

Both Millie and Moxxie are frowning hard at this point, unnecessary concern etched across their brows.

And back one more. The seventeenth from the last or what would have been the 3rd going in the proper order start to finish. It’s virtually silent until the very end. There’s a small, whispered ‘oh’ and then a second even less audible ‘oh’ that cracks in half and is swallowed back into the silence.

Millie barely waits for the voicemail to finish before she’s clicking on the next.

Stolas’ voice comes out of the speaker sounding strangely thin and far away.

‘Blitz…th-they’re gone…I-I think…but I’m all…I’m all out of sorts…I can’t…Blitz…I didn’t want to bother you…I wouldn’t…normally…because I can hold my own and take care of myself…most of the time…with some exceptions…like…like right now…can…Blitz…can you come get me…please?’

Blitz can see from the bend of Loona’s ears and her still fingers that even she’s paused her incessant scrolling to pay attention now.

Millie clicks the final voicemail, the first in the whole series, and holds out the phone like an accusation.

There’s a rumble of soft speech in the background, deep and sinister. And then Stolas, his voice pitched at least an octave too high. ‘Blitz, I, uh, I don’t really know where to begin but I’ve found myself in a bit of a situation. Long story short, I was at Ozzie’s last night, and it seems at some point in the night I was picked up by a rather unsavory little group…I don’t really remember, but they’ve made me a deal…they said they’d give me this one chance before they resort to anything drastic…I mean, this whole thing already seems a little drastic, but they said I had to call you, and if you picked up, then, per the deal, we would all just talk things out and go from there. But you aren’t picking up because I’m guessing you’re pretty busy right now, which I understand completely, but I’m just not sure what happens next so I’m thinking if you could–’

His words are cut off by a bird screech that coincides with the sound of a heavy impact and a frenzy of activity. There’s multiple voices shouting excitedly another prolonged shriek and–

The voicemail ends, and Millie hurls the phone at Blitz’s head as hard and fast as she can.
