Vermont man facing several criminal charges escaped custody for the second time in the past two months (2024)

A Burlington man has escaped custody for the second time in two months. Nicolelus Sanborn, 30, already had an outstanding arrest warrant when he was first taken into custody on June 9 after Burlington Police Department officers responded to a report of a domestic assault at a home on South Willard Street.When police arrived at the home, Sandborn answered the door holding a gun. He shut the door on officers after being ordered to drop the gun.Sanborn dropped the gun out of a window, but officers could hear a commotion from inside the home. After repeated attempts to get someone to open the door, officers forced their way into the residence.Sanborn then climbed out of a window onto the roof and threatened to hit officers with a large stick. When the police pointed their guns at him, he dropped the stick and slammed a window shut on an officer. Sanborn then raised his fist to punch the officer while threatening to kill him. He then got off the roof and was taken into custody. Sanborn was taken to Northwest State Correctional Facility where he was held without bail.On June 17 he was taken to the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans for a medical issue. When Sanborn was being escorted from the hospital by correctional officers after his visit, he escaped from the transport van through an improperly secured door.He attempted to escape on foot, but he was fully restrained in handcuffs and leg shackles and fell after about 20 feet. Sanborn was then taken back into custody and returned to prison.On Monday, Sanborn was being escorted to a treatment halfway house in Wallingford, Vermont yesterday when he escaped.Sanborn told the the representative transporting him that he needed to meet his mother at the Staples in South Burlington to get some clothing. Once he got out of the car at the Staples parking lot he ran away, and the treatment center called the police.Sanborn has an extensive criminal history in Vermont in addition to the aggravated assault of a police officer and simple assault of a police officer charges from June. His previous charges include three failures to appear, two violation of court orders or conditions, four felony charges with one conviction, eight misdemeanor charges with seven convictions, four assaultive crime charges with two convictions, and one assault on an officer charge.Anyone with information about Sanborn or his whereabouts is asked to call the Burlington Police Department at 802-846-4111.
