This report is a perfect example of the significant consequences that can occur when governments and their institutions fail to treat people fairly. Thank you, Ombudsman Dubé and the rest of the Ontario Ombudsman team, for shedding light on this tragic issue and working to ensure no other child ends up in the same situation.

Access to adequate housing that is safe, secure, and affordable is a fundamental human right. We're pleased that Canada recognizes this right, as has the City of Toronto through its Housing Charter and HousingTO 2020-2030 Action Plan (more info here: https://lnkd.in/gycwayiy).The housing crisis has reached dizzying heights, with no signs of slowing down. Fixing it will take collaboration from all levels of government, innovative solutions, a commitment to the needs of those most vulnerable to housing precarity, and importantly, real accountability.Through our Housing Unit, we're holding the City of Toronto accountable to its promise of making Toronto a city where all people have access to adequate housing. If you have questions about this unit or would like to learn more, we welcome you to visit our website at ombudsmantoronto.ca or contact us at ombudsman@toronto.ca.

NEW REPORT: In his report release today, Toronto Ombudsman Kwame Addo says Toronto Hydro acted unfairly by holding a property owner responsible for approximately $20,000 worth of repairs to a hydro vault it never told him he owned. Ombudsman Addo launched the investigation after receiving a complaint from Mr. A., who purchased a unit in a Toronto plaza in 1980. Unknown to him, there was a transformer on his property supplying electricity to the entire plaza. No one told Mr. A that by purchasing the property, he also assumed ownership of the underground vault the housed the transformer and that responsibility for maintaining the vault itself. “Mr. A. had no way of knowing prior to buying the unit about the additional obligations that came with the ownership of the property and Toronto Hydro did nothing to inform him until it was much too late. This was unfair.”You can read more about the investigation here:https://lnkd.in/eUfNAiUs
