After getting off to a 3-0 start in the Western Canadian Baseball League with three straight wins over the expansion Saskatoon Berries, the Regina Red Sox dropped both games in a double-header to the Lethbridge Bulls on Friday.

Regina then bounced back in a big way on Saturday as they beat the Swift Current 57s by a score of 19-1, with Kody Hanna leading the way with two home runs and eight RBIs. Shortstop Mathew Fox also had two home runs to go along with four RBI in the contest. Colton Anderson picked up the win, striking out nine batters over six innings.

Then on Sunday back in Regina, the Sox completed the two-game sweep over Swift Current with a 10-9 victory with nine of the 10 batters in the game scoring a run for the club.

The Red Sox (5-2) are back in action on Wednesday when they host the Weyburn Beavers at Currie Field (7 p.m.) before the team heads on a four-game road trip where they will face the Edmonton Prospects and Fort McMurray Giants.

Memorial Cup

After beating the Moose Jaw Warriors in the semifinal on Friday, the host Saginaw Spirit beat the Ontario Hockey League champion London Knights 4-3 on Sunday to win the 104th Memorial Cup in Saginaw, Mich.

Spirit forward Josh Bloom scored with just 22 seconds left in the game to break a 3-3 tie and give Saginaw its first Memorial Cup in team history.

Saginaw held a 3-0 lead through 40 minutes in the game — keeping London to just six shots in two periods — before the Knights stormed back in the third to tie the game, before losing in the dying seconds.

CHL awards

Despite finishing in third place at the Memorial Cup, some members of the Western Hockey League champion Moose Jaw Warriors still came away with some hardware from the weekend.

At the 2023-24 CHL Awards, Warriors’ forward Jagger Firkus was named the CHL David Branch Player of the Year to go along with earning CHL Top Scorer honours after an impressive season with 126 points in 63 games.

Fellow Warriors’ forward Brayden Yager was named the CHL Sportsman of the Year, after recording 95 points in 57 games with just 20 penalty minutes served.

Warriors’ captain Denton Mateychuk was up for CHL Defenceman of the Year but lost out to Saginaw’s Zayne Parekh.

Mateychuk and Firkus were also named CHL first-team all-stars.

Rugby scores

In local women’s rugby action on the weekend, the Regina Rage beat the Saskatoon Wild Oat Women 51-17 while the Regina Ravens lost to the Saskatoon Kirin 46-40.

In men’s action, the Regina Rogues topped the Saskatoon Krems 67-24 and the Regina Highlanders beat the Saskatoon Wild Oats 33-31, while the Saskatoon Gophers got by the Campion Grads 15-5. The Regina Condors also fell to the Saskatoon Badgers 36-5.
